Bio: Mike DeVellis is no stranger to the NY music scene, as both a live performer and studio musician. He has been playing music the majority of his life, starting with the violin at the age of five. He soon took up the saxophone and began playing jazz at the age of 12. Mike moved to Boston to attend Tufts University where he focused solely on the saxophone and playing jazz. It was at this point that he started his professional career playing out at various clubs. He also started listening to breaks, trip hop, house, and other electronic influenced music. After completing his studies at Tufts, Michael returned to New York to continue playing saxophone. He joined a band that would become known as Soleo that played mostly funk and acid jazz. He also started playing with dj's in clubs over house music, funky breaks, and acid jazz. From 1998-2003, Michael has toured all over the U.S. and Europe playing with various bands and dj's. He has shared the stage with such musicians as Leo Nocentelli, Oteil Burbridge (bass: Allman Brothers), Derek Trucks (lead guitar: Allman Brothers), Melvin Sparks, Kebi Williams (Peacemakers, and Outkast horns), Susan Tedeschi ( grammy award nominee), along with many others. In the house and breaks circuit Michael has recorded and performed with such notables as Joeski, Onionz, Alexi Delano, Krafty Kuts, John Howard, and many others.
Mike presently produces music for Blunted Funk, and runs his own Pockit Records label. He recently completed an album with the Drexler band, and has performed flute and sax for select tunes by Brooklyn band, The Shift. He has also signed original work to labels including OM Recordings, 2020Vision, Citrona, StraightUp Recs (Australia), and Groove Gravy. Look out for lots of new material in 2009!
